THE MOUNTAINS GAVEUS OUR DIRECTION.
Born in Nepal. Built for the journey.
Born beneath the Himalayas
, Outdoor Compass grew from a love for mountains, trails, and stories left behind. From Thamel to footpaths beyond the clouds
, we craft technical gear built for cold winds and steep climbs. Every piece carries more than purpose. It carries the hands that made it, and a belief that moving forward means lifting others.
Kathmandu, 2008
Every journey begins before the trail.
In 2008, Kamal Aryal arrived in Kathmandu searching for opportunity. While working at an outdoor gear shop in Thamel, he met travelers from around the world and listened to stories from mountains he had never explored himself.

One conversation.
A different direction.
A nineteen-year-old traveler walked into the shop. Nepal was already his eleventh country. Kamal had yet to explore the mountains of his own. Until then, the Himalayas had mostly reached him through other people’s stories: cold mornings, long climbs, remote villages, and the quiet confidence travelers carried back into Thamel. Their journeys made him look at his own country differently.
“He had explored more of the world than I had explored my own country.”
That conversation stayed with him. Soon after, he left the shop floor for Mardi Himal, where his first trek opened his eyes to Nepal’s trails, weather, and the gear people depended on outside the city.

Dhorpatan, 2013
A cold night.
A clear purpose.
In Dhorpatan, heavy rain left Kamal cold, soaked, and exhausted. His clothing was never made for these conditions. Sitting beside a teahouse fire, he found both a question and a name.

Why don't we have aNepali outdoor brandthat truly understandsour mountains?
That evening, he decided the name “Outdoor Compass”.
Built on belief, 2014-2017
A family’s belief.
A beginning in Thamel.
His two younger brothers, working in Korea, sent their savings home. Suppliers offered credit and trust. Together, they made the first Outdoor Compass shop possible in 2014.
The 2015 earthquake tested that beginning. Kamal kept going and repaid his debts. After a failed venture in Taiwan, he returned in 2017 to the name born in Dhorpatan — committed to making Outdoor Compass his future.

Built by belief.
Unbroken by setbacks.
Made here, since 2020
Four machines.
A new chapter.
During the pandemic lockdown, Kamal opened a production line with just four sewing machines. Working alongside tailors, he learned the details of fit, fabric, and construction — and began making outdoor clothing from the ground up.
Today, Outdoor Compass supports more than twenty jobs and two outlets in Thamel. Opportunities go to people too often overlooked, including widows and those from very poor backgrounds.

More than gear.
A livelihood.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
THE MOUNTAINS GAVE IT PURPOSE.THE PEOPLE GIVE IT MEANING.
From a question beside a teahouse fire to every stitch made today, the story of Outdoor Compass is still being written.
